About 40,000 women and 400 men will die of breast cancer again this year in the United States. In Illinois, more than 11,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. These statistics have not changed significantly over past decades. The number of individuals dying every year from breast cancer must change.
In July 2012 a group of breast cancer advocates formed END Breast Cancer Illinois, in support of the National Breast Cancer Coalition's (NBCC) Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®. Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® seeks to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020 by focusing research efforts on developing a vaccine to prevent breast cancer and on preventing persons from dying from advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
